Peter from Denmark decided to chase the Wahoo with a fly. He had some fun with his fly rod around the FAD’s, (Fish Aggregating Devices) between Khao Lak and Similan Island.
We started the first day on the reef in search of Giant trevally. But our GT season has not been good so far. After a while, we decided to switch tactics and went out to the FAD, and see if we could find some of the Wahoo that always hang around from September to December.
It is not every day an angler comes in contact with a Wahoo on fly, and it is without a doubt one of the most aggressive game fish. With a speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour this makes the Wahoo the second fastest fish, in the sea that can be targeted by anglers.
At the first FAD there was some smaller Dorado up in the boat before they were released again. As we fish the last FAD that day, something big hits the fly; the line cleared the deck in a matter of seconds and before you could count to 10. Peter ran out of backing, it was his first contact with a big Wahoo.
If he did not already knew what he had set as a target, he got a really good idea. They have an awesome first run, that can challenge the drag system on even the largest fly reels. Some experts say it is the hardest and fastest first run, of any game fish and with a mouth full of razor blades that will cut through most leader materials, which is what you deal with when you will play with the Wahoo.
On the last day, we went out to the FAD again and with an upgrade of the fly fishing equipment. Peter was ready; He landed 5 Wahoo up to 9-10 kg and not forgetting a few nice Dorado up to about 7 Kg.
