Guided Giant Gourami fly fishing in Thailand; one of the hardest fighting fish species our Jungle water offers the fly anglers.
We are extremely excited to be the first fishing guide services in Thailand, that can offer fly fishing trips for Giant Gourami. The flooded freshwater reservoir is home for a very healthy population of big Giant Gourami and provides some exciting sight fishing for this powerful fish. It’s not a numbers game, but not uncommon to have multiple shots on large size fish on the same day.
Giant Gourami is a member of the Osphronemidae family. Feeds mostly on plants, but also feeds on small fish and insects. They can be caught on Dry flies, Nymph and small Streamer. If it should have a nickname, it would be “Jungle Permit”. The saltwater Permit is known as the “Holy Grail” for the fly fisherman, because they are one of the most difficult, frustrating and picky fish you will encounter. They have superb eyesight, are famous for refusing the flies you present and an amazing ability to sense fear. All this fits very well if you are to describe Giant Gourami fishing for a fly fisherman.
Our Giant Gourami fly fishing trips are done from long tail boats, with a large casting platform at the front. Equipped with an electric engine, which is a must have, when you are searching over the water. There are many things that must be just right, in order to get a Giant Gourami from water to hand. One of the most important keys is to spot the fish before they are alerted to your presence. Your first cast needs to be close enough to pass through the fish’s sight window. But not so close as to cause the fish to spook, quick, accurate casting skills are essential. Our experienced fishing guides will greatly increase your chance of catching this tricky fish.
We recommend 9 ft. fly rods that can carry a 6 to 7 weights floating line. With a suitable fly reel that can hold 200 m backing line. Fly lines like the RIO’s OutBound Short or the Elite Warmwater Predator series, are perfect for this style of fishing. These lines have a short and aggressive front taper, that load your rod very quickly, so you can deliver your fly with a few blind casts. The fly leader setup for Giant Gourami; we like to use is a 12 ft. fluorocarbon leader, with a powerful butt section, tapered down to about 20 lbs. When booking a Giant Gourami Fly fishing trip with Thai Fishing. Our fishing guides will carry good supplies of the necessary flies for this trip.
