The Geological Marvels of Cheow Lan Lake:

The area boasts a landscape that seems straight out of a fairy tale, with its iconic limestone karsts towering majestically over emerald waters. These remarkable formations are not merely a result of chance. They are the product of intricate geological processes that span millions of years. The story begins eons ago, during the late Permian period, when this region was submerged beneath a vast prehistoric sea. Over time, the remnants of marine organisms, such as shells and coral, accumulated on the seabed. The gradual compression of these organic materials gave rise to layers of limestone, a sedimentary rock predominantly composed of calcium carbonate.

Around 65 million years ago:

During the late Cretaceous period, tectonic forces started reshaping the Earth’s crust. Consequently, the ancient sea retreated, unveiling the limestone deposits that had been forming for countless millennia. The limestone underwent a remarkable transformation through a process known as karstification. Rainwater, enriched with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trickled through the rock, gradually dissolving the calcium carbonate. This dissolution process carved out intricate caves, underground rivers, sinkholes, and, most notably, the towering karsts.
